«Сумасшедший, как шляпник», сумасшедший, спятивший. Фраза as mad as a hatter стала популярной благодаря Льюису Кэрроллу и его книге «Алиса в Стране чудес» (1865 г.). Однако это выражение можно было встретить ранее в произведении У. М. Теккерея 'Pendennis' (1850 г.), а ещё раньше, в 1836 г., оно появилось в Америке. Mercurous nitrate (ртутная соль), которая использовалась в производстве фетровых шляп, была вредной для здоровья и являлась причиной такой болезни, как пляска св. Витта, которая и послужила, по-видимому, основанием для возникновения этой фразы.
